Study of 100+ years of Graphic Design in Marathi



Marathi, the third largest spoken and written language in India, there exists an abundant amount of works in literature, media, promotional material and more. Many graphic designers have created a wealth of design work that contributed towards the success of Marathi literature.

Marathi language has a rich tradition of Books to Magazines, Children Story Books to Diwali Special Publications, Traditional Marathi Packaging Designs, Movie Posters, Album Covers, Calendar Designs etc. With traditional maharashtrian symbols and typography, this compilation of the Marathi Graphic Design will be a good course material for our students.

This research aims to compile, analyse and document 100+ years of graphic design in Marathi.

When we talk about Indian Stamps in Devanagari, two stamps that were designed in 1960s to commemorate 'Ashadhasya Pratham Divase' - First day of Aashadh (Marathi Month Aashadh), would be celebrated and cherished first.  This stamp is based on the painting by Professor Radha Charan Bagchi of Kala Bhavan, Shantiniketan illustrating scene from the great works of Kavi Kulguru Kalidas - The Meghaduta. The designs of stamp has been executed by the staff artists of Indian Security Press - Mr. P.B.Chitnis and Mr. K.M. Dhar. This stamp is based on the painting by Raja Ravi Varma - celebrated in this country for his portrayals of figures and scenes from classical and mythological life and lore; illustrating scene from the great works of Kavi Kulguru Kalidas - The Shakuntal. Incidentally this was the very first painting done by Raja Ravi Varma on Indian Mythology in 1878.   This is compilation of the paintings by Shri Raghuvir Mulgaonkar. I will keep adding more as I go through the collection of his works I will also collect more information on the artist and will publish the same here for the readers.
